Brown to red to brown hair colour?!

I am naturally a medium brown with golden undertones. I dyed my hair a dark red brown but it came out as vibrant (too vibrant!) cherry red! I have been washing my hair with head and shoulders volumising shampoo which has faded the colour quite significantly but I still hate it.
I am wondering if i can get rid of some of the red undertone by dying my hair to basically my natural colour, which is lighter than it is currently? I do not want to use any of the colour removers as i dont think i can handle going ginger and then re-dying all within a few weeks of my graduation photos?
Will a lighter ash colour not actually lighten my hair?
Thanks in advance!!

Yes, you can cancel some of the red color by using "semi permanent" hair color. This is a product that is easier on the hair (it doesn't stay in the hair as long a permanent color) just make sure that you use an ash color brown. The ash will help to counter act the red. Try a level 5 A (ash) brown and you will be able to do it again for your graduation photos with out damaging your hair.
