Covering up black hair color

I got some highlights and they weren't what i wanted so i colored all of my hair. It was suppose to come out a dark brown and it came out black. I immediately washed it and it wouldn't wash out. I waited 24 hours and went and got a light brown hair color and colored over it and it didn't do anything. what can i do to lighten it up some??
