Formaldehyde free Brazilian Keratin

by Candice
(Surrey)

Some of the Brazilian keratin products offered in the US are formaldehyde free and work perfectly. I know because I have had it done and my hairdresser in the US is a distributor for a formaldehyde free product.

I have been bringing the product over to the UK and it is being used by a salon near Croydon in Surrey and taking off well with customers. The biggest problem we've found is finding a distributor of sodium chloride free shampoo!

And what product is that? Do you have a list of ingredients? Are you sure its Formaldehyde free?

Keratin
by: Anonymous

Yes I have seen the product details on the bottle and have met the distributor who sells it to my contact in Florida. The product is not with me right now (it's in the salon) so I cannot confirm the exact ingredients.

I have known the person I buy it from for 12+ years and she was my stylist in the US before I moved back here. She also sells a product with formaldehyde in it which is cheaper. The formaldehyde free product is used in a salon which is one of the top ranked in South Florida and they do approx. 6-10 clients every day, and have had no problems or complaints.

Confused about Keratin?
by: J.Fox

It might be formaldehyde-free treatment, but there must be something else that straight the hair and it CAN'T be keratin. I just visited the FAQ section of the website mentioned here and on one point says:

Is this treatment a relaxer ?
"No. It is a treatment based of keratin that naturally straightens your hair".

But Keratin has nothing to do with straightening.
Keratin is just a protein and can't change the structure of the hair. Keratin's role in all these treatments is to coat the hair, which is what gives the hair a shiny, glossy finish.

Hi Anonymous
The product I have been providing to the salon in Warlingham is not available in UK. I bring it back from the US with me. I go approximately every six months which allows me to do this.

Hi J Fox
I'm not a hairdresser so I can't answer your query. However if you contact Donna at straightenmyhair.com she will be able to answer any queries you have.
She's a fully qualified senior stylist in a top Florida salon and understands all the ins and outs of how it works. They are doing this treatment every day and have done it on hundreds, if not thousands, of clients now.
All I know is it works perfectly on my hair and I have naturally curly, very frizzy hair. My hair is also in far better condition now and has excellent shine.

Happy to answer any queries that I can, but technical ones will need to be addressed to Donna as she's the one who provides this product.
I can't stress enough how professional and qualified she is - she would never use a product she didn't believe in herself.
The salon where she works (both as stylist and hairdressing department manager) has been featured in Elle, Vogue, In Style and a variety of beauty and hairdressing magazines in the US. It has received numerous awards for the services they offer. They are a full beauty salon offering hairstyling - including a dedicated section for black ladies hair, all forms of beauty treatment including some very original ideas, botox, make up lessons, bridal treatments, specialist Jewish therapies and much much more.
They have two salons in the Fort Lauderdale area - one of which is located in the prestigous Seminole Hard Rock Hotel, the other a specially built salon where more than 150 staff are employed.

so -called formaldehyde free

Of course it is not the Keratin doing the straightening. Formaldehyde-Free products use another aldehyde. Look at your MSDS, and check out the known irritants. ALL these products MUST be used with ventilation, and masks. Not ones for particulates, ones for gasses. Just like "no-Lye's" chemical cousins, these products require the same cautions as ones with formaldehyde.

And they should never be used ON or BY anyone pregnant or with asthema!

Formaldehyde/Brazilain Keratin Treatments

Well said. Keratin is a protein that cannot straighten hair. For straightening you must have formaldehyde or glutraldehyde(or glutral) or glyoxal. All of these compounds are from the same nasty aldehyde family and are regulated by FDA and REACH in Europe. Unfortunately, many small companies have sprung up to sell this type of products and they do not provide accurate information. To be safe and sure, you should get your products of this category checked or tested by an independent laboratory for the presence of aldehyde.

Another clue, why L'Oreal, Wella or Proctor and Gamble offer such products? Because they cannot afford to misrepresent the facts.

Be careful

Totally agree with some of the comments given by pretty smart people. What consumers should keep in mind is that none of these companies are regulated and they can introduce whichever chemical they please into these products. KERATIN DOES PLAYS NO ROLE IN THE PROCESS OF STRAIGHTENING THE HAIR..........think about it before applying this product onto your hair.

KERATIN

Of course it does not straighten your hair its for FRIZZ FREE hair it gets rid of 80% of frizz, and its great no frizz in the summer anymore in fact anytime of year only thing is you cant wash it or put it in a ponytail of put it behind your ears for 3 days otherwise you,ll get a bend in the hair. I had the Global Keratin brand and love it.

Global Keratin

Sorry to tell you - I just spoke with Global Keratin and they tell me they have 0.2% formaldehyde in their products. They say its past tests etc but at the end of the day its not chemical free

Formaldehyde free?? I think not
by: Anonymous

Just to let everyone know.... There is currently no Brazilian Keratin treatment product on the market that is formaldehyde free.... The companies that make these claims are partially correct in that the product contains no formaldehyde. They usually contain other chemicals (Methalene glycol,Methyl Aldehyde, Formalin, Methylene Oxide, Oxomethane, Formol, Oxymethylene Etc.etc.) These chemical are NOT formaldehyde, but PRODUCE formaldehyde when heated. The reputable companies' products produce a small amount of formaldehyde which may cause some irritation but are otherwise safe to use. Bear in mind that in our industry, there is formaldehyde and other dangerous chemicals present in our everyday workplaces, and as long as it is used correctly, is safe.

Formaldehyde free?? I think not
by: Grant

Sorry to disappoint you all, but there are currently NO products that are formaldehyde free. They all contain a chemical that, under heat produces formaldehyde. So, while the actual product doesn't theoretically contain the actual chemical, it WILL produce formaldehyde when heated.
The more reputable companies however, have products that produce acceptable levels of formaldehyde. There is a lot of scaremongering going on, as there is formaldehyde all around us. The vaccine for bird flu contains formaldehyde! So does our furniture, shoes, nail polishes, carpets etc.

Remember a few years ago when we were all told that Mobile phones were going to fry our brains? What's happened to that?

Just be sensible when using products that contain chemicals, and you'll be fine.....

Formaldehyde around us!? HOW?
by:

Grant, there is something wrong with your reasoning and logic.

You said:
"product contains no formaldehyde. They usually contain other chemicals (Methalene glycol,Methyl Aldehyde, Formalin, Methylene Oxide, Oxomethane, Formol, Oxymethylene Etc.etc.) These chemical are NOT formaldehyde, but PRODUCE formaldehyde when heated."

Formaldehyde exist when only heated as gaseous state. TRUE OK, then how can it be all around us in carpet, nail polish and shoes? Are we heating our nails and shoes everyday to 400 degree to produce formaldehyde gas and inhale it?

But you do with keratin treatment. You heat it everyday and you inhale it everyday... Scaremongering? No.... Its Scientific facts.

Formaldhyde Free Products
by: Barb M

I think the other part that several of you are missing is that not only do you have Formaldhyde in products, but they also have releasing agents. I am allergic to Formaldhyde, its releasing agents and Quaternium 15. These products are in our clothing, carpets, beauty products, cleaning products, shoes, etc. Even though in some items the amount may be low, to someone that is allergic it does not matter how much is in the product you are affected.

Worrying reviews in newspapers regarding formaldehyde in Keratin shampoos. Would welcome any safe alternatives and will hopefully hear more on this site.

Brazillian Blowout - Straight & Natural
by: MisT

There is a new Keratin straightener, just released on the market. It is natural, it provides straight frizz free hair until you wash it. Makes blowing out and flat ironing a breeze. Leaves hair soft and manageable. It's called Straight & Natural. It takes keratin from nature and does not change hair structure, effectively bonds to the outside of hair and keeps it straight. All chemically free.
