Hair Color - Thinking About Going Darker

I am currently a cooler shade of blonde, but I am thinking about going darker. Should I also choose cool dark shades or is there a limit on how dark I can go? Can I go black, because I dyed my hair black once and I looked very "washed out."?

My skin tone is fair to light with pink undertones.
