I have had my hair extensions in for about 2 months now and the bonds have gone very soft and sticky. Is there any thing that i can do 2 harden them?

No that is not normal. This is called Fusion Extension. Hair is dipped into hot pot (or melting pot) filled with melted keratin and then attached to hair. It only takes few minutes for keratin bonds to dry and get hard. I can't understand why they should be sticky!

My only explanation is that they used bad quality or cheap keratin sticks.

Bonds are sticky
by: Anonymous

I just had my very first set of hair extensions done this past Friday so unsure if what I am experiencing is normal or not. The stylist stated she used keratin. She melted a small bar of keratin in a container and used that to apply the extensions to my hair.

I haven't washed my hair since then (it is now Monday). The bonds have been sticky since day of application. The stylist applied baby powder after finishing each row of extensions. But they stick to each other, to my hair, and to my scalp.

Are the bonds supposed to bend, stick? The hair feels matted in my scalp and its only been 2 days.

I went back to see the stylist and she just applied more baby powder and now they are sticking to my scalp again. Help...

Kim, Those bonds are made of silicone or protein polymers and they can break down (become soft and sticky) if you use any products that not recommended by company that you purchased them. So you need to look up what they recommended to use.

Normal shampoo and conditioners can break down the bonds. Use only shampoo and conditioners that recommended by your extension brand. Never apply conditioners to the root area.

Styling products like was, gel, root lift spray containing silicon, oil, wax or alcohol could damage the bonds. The best practice is to avoids those bonds. Use styling products to mid and ends of your hair.

Chemicals in swimming pools, or high PH of sea water (which is around 8.2) can also damage the bonds. If you use these activities you need some sort of PH balance rinse.

After each wash you need to dry the hair as soon as possible. Don't let it air dry but don't use excess heat either! High temperature makes the bonds soft and will damage them. When drying hair, do not direct heat at root. Always use diffuser to dry the hair and separate the extensions at root area with your fingers.

Following these guidelines and using recommended products by your extension brand will extend the life of your hair extension bonds. I just hope your bonds are not that damage so you might still have hope to save them otherwise you need to re-bond them by making appointment with your stylist.
Wish you luck!
