lightener or bleach process

Tara, let me explain why is that. To get the blonde you want, they have to bleach your hair to a very light yellow (the lightest possible blonde) and then tint it back to the blonde colour you want.

Yellow and red pigments -- also called pheomelanin pigments -- are more difficult to remove. If your hair contain a lot of yellow pigments, then it must be processed in longer time with high concentration of peroxide. The amount of time and concentration depends on the condition of your hair. If they process your hair all the way, it might break. And if they process your hair to its limit, they might not be able to get all the yellow pigments out and when tinting back the new color turn gold because of the remaining yellow pigments.

Get a second opinion with a professional and experienced Coulorist. They do strand test and let you know how far and what colour your can bleach your hair into.
