Is it Possible to Lighten Hair Without Bleaching?

by Amanda C.
(Australia)

I have been dying my natural strawberry blonde hair dark brown for years but I want to lighten it to a dark golden blonde without bleaching it. Is it possible? I would love to do it at home as i cant afford to get it done professionally.

Since you have dyed your hair Dark Brown you can go up 2 levels which which would be medium brown but there is no guarantee it will not pull red. Your best bet is let it fade a bit to a medium brown. You can help it along by using Prell shampoo, this will fade hair up or ask someone at a salon that may be your best bet. You can easily darken hair but it is very tricky to lighten dark hair usually you need a professional to do this Good Luck!

Hey, Color won't lift color. Usually if you want to lighten an artificial color it must be bleached. There are sulfer based products that will shrink the Color molecule and allow you to wash out the color. It must be done by a professional though.

Prevana is a color company that makes a good color remover. If you can find someone that uses Prevana color, they can probably help you. Just an fyi, because it is sulfer based....it smells terrible. Your hair will smell like you got a perm for about a week. It removes only the artificial color, it won't touch your virgin roots and it is non damaging. The only problem with it is...you need to wait a couple of days and keep shampooing before re-coloring. If you recolor immediately it can re-expand any color molecule left in your hair and go right back dark.

I suggest making an appointment as late as possible on a Friday and then you have all weekend to wash it (the more you wash it the more likely you are to get all the remaining color molecules out. Then you can recolor on Monday. But I would still suggest you see a professional for all of the above. Sorry. Hope this helps
