My bad reaction to Keratin Complex Treatment

by Yvonne Nelson
(Ireland)

I got my keratin complex just before my holiday and on arrival at my destination i had to go straight to hospital. My scalp, forehead and ears had blistered and filled with pus also one eye swelled up so much i could hardly see out it. My forehead also swelled up and my whole face looked distorted not to mention painful. The doctor gave me steroids, antihistamines and washed out my hair as i was still not supposed to wash it yet. I was ill all that week of my holiday.

When i went back to my hairdresser she said it was supposed to be completely safe!!and thats why she didn't do a strand test so she reckons she is not to blame. What do i do now? has anyone else heard of this happening or am i the only one?

Bad mistake not doing patch and strand test
by: Nancy

I am sorry to hear about your condition and hope it goes away soon. This is the responsibility of your hairdresser and nothing to do with Keratin Complex. You had a severe allergic reaction to some sort of chemicals present in Keratin Complex. Your doctor gave you antihistamines? This is for allergic reaction. You could easily had the same reaction using any other type of chemical treatments. There are many people that are allergic to PPD which are used in some permanent hair colors.

Some hairdressers forgetting or dismissing the fact that clients (new or not) can develop sensitivity or allergic reactions through prolonged use of chemicals like coloring, perming, relaxing or keratin treatment. Strand testing is not enough. Hairdressers do strand testing to assess the compatibility of chemical treatment with your hair. They must also perform Patch test or skin test to see your skin reaction to that kind of chemicals.

All you can do now is to follow your doctors advice and stay away from chemicals until you determine exactly what chemical component you allergic to! Don't let this bad experience stop you from your beauty treatments.

Hi dear, sorry to hear that ,I'm a hair stylist , and i never had any problem with the keratine ,i think you had a allergic reaction, your stylist should try the strand test first.

Keratin and hives
by: Tracey

I have been relaxing and coloring my hair for many, many years and have never had any problems. This past August I had the first Keratin treatment and a few weeks later had my hair colored to hide the grays. Within a few days I had hives behind my ears and on the back of my neck. Went to the dermatologist and he gave me a cream which seemed to help but was still itching. Went back in a month and he took a biopsy and told me I was allergic to something; that next time I get my hair dyed to see what happens. Last month I had my hair dyed again and within 3 days the hives came and now they are on my back, legs and arms. Going to the allergist tomorrow to see if I am allergic to the keratin and/or if the keratin and coloring together is the problem. Odds are I will go back to the regular relaxing!

sorry to hear

I am a hair stylist myself n your stylist should have performed a strand test. you most likely had an allergic reaction to it. i would hope they would have at least giving you your money back.

Bad allergic reaction to keratin treatment
by: Pilar

I've had 5 keratin treatments in the past w/ no problems.
My hair dresser tried a new Japanese keratin treatment on me yesterday (along w/my hair color) and I had a horrible reaction 24 hrs later. Hives, severe itching and red bumps all throughout my body. My hands, neck, and ears were so hot/itchy it felt like they were on fire. Went to the ER because even after taking a few benadryl capsules within just a few hours, the itching would not subside. My right eye also got very swollen a few hours after hives appeared hing had started. Doctor prescribed IV benadryl and steroids which relieved the itching quite a bit for a good while. Itching returned a few hours later. Any good ideas for stopping the itching other than using antihistamines pills and lotions?
Of course I had to wash my hair a few days before I was supposed to. I will definitely ask her to do a patch test next time before I get another keratin treatment done.

Advice from a stylist
by: Anonymous

Basically with your keratin complex treatment as the solution is quite runny its near impossible to not get any on the skin (eg the ears neck and part of the forehead) as this product oxidizes it is on and processing on the skin for the 3 days so thats probably why you've had reactions. I personally have very sensitive skin and have allergies to near everything and as a stylist and someone who has had this done i haven't had a single problem. Strand/patch test or no.

Has it been recalled
by: Anonymous

Ive heard this product has been recalled from the market in Ireland, has anyone worked in a salon that it has been recalled?

RECALL
by: Anonymous

The product recalled in Ireland was Global Keratin and it was recalled because it was found to contain 2% formaldehyde, and the legal limit is less than 1%. Keratin Complex by Coppola is formaldehyde free. I do not know about all of the other brands on the market.

Keratin complex is also been marked in respect to safety issues... Safety alert

My bad reaction to keratin hair straightening treatment
by: Anonymous

I also had bad reaction and I am telling my story to make everybody aware of possibly reactions before using these type of treatments. First day of the treatment yes my hair was shiny and very straight just like I wanted it. Though, few hours after I left the hair salon, I started getting the itching going in my forehead and neck. However, I did not think too much of it.

The next day the itching became more severe and some places in my scalp started getting the scabs that had some discharge. After 48 hours, my forehead started becoming a bit swollen and that night my left eye became very swollen and puffy.

The third day in the morning I woke up with both eyes swollen just like when a mosquito bites your eyelids. First thing I did was to wash the product out of my head and I did not dry my hair.

Called the doctor who told me to get Benadryl and if in 6 hours I did not feel better I should go to a 24-Clinic (it was Saturday). The swollen was still there and I decided to go to the clinic. They gave me steroids and asked me to continue on Benadryl for 2 days. Also, they asked me to use cortisone cream to apply in the itching areas.
This is where I am so let's see how fast my puffy face gets back to normal.

My hair looks fine even without using a dryer or the iron. I do not know what component of the Keratin treatment I was allergic to but my hair stylist should have had more info about this product and perform a skin test before using it. Also, I should have researched more about this product. There seems to be some controversy out there specially with the Formaldehyde ingredient.

Allergic to Keratin
by: MinsterDeavers

I am a Stylist and had the keratin treatment before work last night. My hair looked gorgeous, I clocked in and started my shift. Approximately 2 hrs later I started to sneeze and get congested. My scalp started to itch along with my hands and wrists. Next thing I know my whole face and neck had swollen. I had to clock out. Get my boss to wash the Keratin out off my hair , take a couple benadryl and go home, feeling totally ugly. All i can say is DO A STRAND TEST & A Skin TEST! This is an expensive service to go wrong! I caught my allergic reaction in time , did not even last 8 hrs. But, I also took a shower asap when I got home to get the rest off the keratin off of my neck and face.

Keratin Complex being harmful??
by: Anonymous

Oh no it just kills you!! They lie about the ingredients. As a matter of fact they don't even list the ingredients on the bottle. They just started a few months ago printing the ingredients. They LIE about the fact that is it safe. IT has been PROVEN and TESTED that is does CONTAIN FORMALDEHYDE or as they like to call it ALDEHYDE from the rain forest.

IT has at least 6% Formaldehyde and law allows .2% in a product. I have MAJOR BREATHING problems from doing them for 3 years like sometimes 2 times a day. It causes all kind s of cancer and it is a carcinogen. OH but they say it is NATURAL (BULL SH*T) in the resin form. Yea but when we HAVE to HEAT it to 450F it ain't so safe!!! EVERY stylist has reactions and some like mine didnt appear till 2 years later.

We all get lathargic dissy tired film in our mouth. But a lot of stylist dont say anything cause they LOVE making that MONEY, but you cant take it with you when you die.

Very bad reaction
by: Nancy

I had the Keratin treatment on Thurs 11/11/10.On Mon I went to the dermatologist w scalp full of itchy rashes/scaps & my eyelids & face swollen. She gave me prednisone for 10 days. Similar symptoms to Yvonne of Ireland. I have not confronted my hairstylist yet. I have to wear sun glasses or else I will scare myself & others. I was not given any scratch test. I am sometimes sensitive to skin prods, so I will be VERY cautions in the future, but many friends were praising this dangerous treatment. Lets get this product regulated. I took pictures, anyone else??

ITCHY, LARGE HIVES, LOOK LIKE A MONSTER
by: Anonymous

The first time I had the keratin treatment which was six months ago I was fine but two days ago I had it done again and soon afterwards I started feeling itchy, the next day I had large hives in my forehead and in the back of my neck. My whole head and scalp are itchy and even though I washed my hair this morning and am taking Benadryl every four hours I am still swollen and itchy.

If tomorrow I still feel this way I will go to the ER and have a doctor look into this. I asked the stylist about possible allergic reactions and she has never heard about it before. I thought I was going crazy until I read this blog. I hope you all feel better and that this is not permanent.

Banned in Ireland
by: Anonymous

I am a hair stylist and never agreed with the keratin complex,it makes all of us in the salon feel ill when its been done on a client.Anyway to get to the point it has been taken off the market, we have been officially told from our rep. It has an illegal amount of formaldehyde and basically we have been bu**ted to about it been formaldehyde free. If its in any salon from now on I would say report it,you can be sure some salons will chance there arm and stay using it..

Itchy Reaction to Keratin Treatment
by: Gina

The morning after my keratin treatment, I woke up itching around my hairline and ears. The places had almost become whelp-like on my temples and ears before the day was over. I finally got to wash my hair this morning and it is some better, but I'm still taking benedryl for the itching. Just a warning to anyone with sensitive skin.

Throat feels swollen
by: Anonymous

Hi, its been about 3 months since I had the treatment done. From the moment I got home I felt my throat swollen and like I couldn't breathe. Like if someone was choking me. I washed the treatment out but its 3 months later and I am not getting any better. I have been to an internist and an Ear Nose Throat specialist and they cant find what is causing the difficulty breathing. It feels like my chest is tight and like I'm not getting enough oxygen when I breathe. Has anyone else had this happen after a treatment?

My bad reaction to this product
by: Anonymous

Hi just want to add my experience. I received my keratin treatment just before the holidays. My hair looked great.Approximately 24 hours later I started sneezing and getting nausea. My scalp started burning and my upper arms, face and neck was swollen. I got a severe rash all over my body and the itch was so severe I was admitted in the hospital for my steroid treatment, but while doing my stay there, I found out that i was allergic to the steroids I was given and they had to change it immediately because of complications. Later on, I found out from the doctor that it was a close call and that it was a good call that I came to the ER for treatment. This product should be banned by the FDA until more regulations and research is done to determined if the product is safe.

HELP!
by: Nicole

So I have also gotten the Keratin treatment done on my hair almost 2 months ago. I didn't notice at first, but about a week after it was done I noticed I started getting hives all over my abdomen and neck. Then it spread to my chest, front of neck and back, back, and arms. It's insane. Everytime I shower it flares up because the keratin is being washed out a bit and is spread over the rest of my body, everytime I lay my head on my arms, my arms get covered. My hair rubs on my jackets, etc. so when I wear my jacket it flares up. I don't know what to do!
I'm obviously allergic, even though it took me a while to figure out that's what it was. Now I'm stuck with this in my hair for months. Is there a way to make this wash out quicker? Every day Iwake up with more hives on my neck because of having to sleep on my hair. They itch like crazy and it looks horrible.

HELP! If anyone knows how to get this to wash out quicker I would love to know

I Have used the keratin complex 3 times and have had no reaction what so ever I guess every individual is made up different and what works for one does not work for another

Getting Keratin Out your hair faster
by: Anonymous

I am told that sodium chloride (salt) helps to 'undo' the treatment, and get more of the product off your hair. The instructions for the treatment aftercare tell you to steer clear of sodium chloride in shampoos or hair products, and that salt water and chlorine can make the product wear off faster.

I am also trying to undo the effects of a coppolla keratin allergic reaction on my daughter. Lots and lots of salt. might not be good for her hair but she has major hives and I don't want her in the ER either. :)

Reaction
by: Anonymous

After reading these comments I'm starting to think I might have had an allergic reaction to the treatment also. I've been known to have sensitive skin, but never even thought about the hair and scalp. My treatment was done a couple months ago. Lots of itching: behind ears, scalp and eyelids and back of neck. This week started to bug my face also. Like the style, but not worth the discomfort. Hoping not to have to go to a doctor for this.

Sounds like PPD
by: Anonymous

All of your comments sound just like a PPD allergy. Its usually associated with permanent hair dye, I am allergic to it and have done a lot of research on it. It can kill you, and each time you come into contact with it your allergy reactions get worse. The beauty industry is full of harsh chemicals. PPD goes under many names so do not believe anything is PPD free even if the manufacturer says so..always do 2 patch tests. Please be careful like I said this isn't anything to fool around with

Bad reaction to Pravana Keratin
by: Anonymous

I had the Pravana Keratin treatment on June 15th and have experienced horrific side effects ever since. My scalp was numb tight and felt burnt that night. As the days progressed it felt as if someone was pulling my hair out of my head, sticking pins in it and my hair has been falling out in clumps ever since. I am just about bald on the top of my head. I've gone to see the doctor to see if it was a medical problem. Not so. I've also gone to the derm. and was given a topical cortisone cream . It has been a terrible three weeks of my life. Oh and I forgot the burning ears, headache and eye pain. I also went back to the salon and they've never had this problem. The representative from Pravana never called back!

I had my first treatment last MAY (2010 ) AND ... my hair has just got THINNER and THINNER ... Has anyone else notice this ?? I used to have really thick hair . Even my hairdresser of 10 years noticed this change .

It could be the Keratin itself, not the treatment
by: Anonymous

I had an express treatment done several months ago with no immediate problem. I loved the results so I started purchasing hair products from the beauty supply store with keratin in them, including a keratin serum.

Recently after I colored my hair I got the allergic reaction, red itchy bumps first on the tops of my ears, then spreading to all over them and the skin around them for an inch or so into my scalp area. At first I thought it was the hair coloring. And while continued washings have helped, I am still having the itching and the rash mostly on the tops of my ears where the hair falls (I have long hair.)

So in reading about keratin and itching, there is actually a skin condition called keratosis, where the keratin natural to the skin builds up and causes itchy bumps. So I'm thinking that for me it may be the continued use of the keratin serum that is building up on my skin, and then when I colored it it set off a reaction. So I'm going to try to discontinue the keratin serum and not buy any more shampoos or conditioners with keratin in them. Then maybe if I do an occasional treatment it won't be so bad? Good to know I'm not the only one who's been having this reaction, though.

HIVES after Keratin
by: Anonymous

I have almost two month with a severe hives after a hair treatment with Keratin, it is horrible, I have been two times in ER for angioedema.

2 months later - major hives
by: Anonymous

My right eye is so swollen that I can't see out of it. I had the treatment 2 months ago but I'm just now getting the allergic results on my face. They didn't do a patch test on me and I should have asked for one as I have allergic asthma. I won't do the treatment again. My husband likes my hair curly so I will stick with that. I wound up in the ER and they said it was contact dermatitis, gave me Prednison, Benadryl and it worked for a while but it keeps coming back.

Frizzies did not go away
by: Anonymous

I had the Keratin treatment for the first time along with my normal color treatment. When I left my hairdressers I was very pleased. After 3 days, I washed my hair, using the $40.00 shampoo & conditioner, it looked like it was burned. I have worse frizzies then I did before I I had the treatment. I was told I could wash & go. Not the case. I would never get this again.

Had the Keratin treatment--the second one by my stylist on Wednesday. By Thursday morning, my neck itched and Th afternoon there were blisters. Fri morning, I stopped by salon to ask what she recommended. She didn't even really look up from the current customer!!! After my breathing seemed choked, I visited the ER Friday night. Two shots, an IV and a graduated steroid pack and I still look like a monster.
