My Hair is an Oily Dry Mess!

by Estelle

I don't know what to do. I have fine, thin hair that has never had a problem being oily. If anything, sometimes I've had problems with it being dry. In January, I noticed one spot on the back of my scalp was Very Oily. I would put Paul Mitchell Tea Tree just on the spot and it would help, but the oil would come back a couple of days later. Now, my entire hair is oily and cotton-like. I can only comb my hair with a wide tooth comb, and it takes a long time because it is so tangled, thick and oily/dry.

I also have an oily dandruff like substance on my scalp. I don't use products very often, and I haven't used anything different on my hair in the past year.

I've also noticed A LOT more gray in my hair. Is this hormonal maybe? I'm almost 34 and I also have Cystic Ovaries (which I read could be a cause of this).

I've tried a shampoo for oily/dry hair but it only strips it. When I put conditioner on the mid to bottom of my hair(a light detangler from Paul Mitchell) it just feels like there's a film of oil on the dry patches.

I can't do anything with my hair except put it up and keep it away from my face (I'm now breaking out near my hairline). This has been driving me crazy for 2 months now!!

Couple of suggestions

It can be quite frustrating dealing with excessive oily hair condition. Oily hair and dandruff are symptoms of Cystic Ovaries syndrome. I don't know of any cosmetic or topical application that can cure this.

Unless you find a medical solution that deals with it from inside-out, you probably need to continue using products that deal with excess oily hair... regularly.

I think your hair is dry because you been using clarifying shampoos and avoiding moisturizers and conditioners. Try to opt for a shorter hair - if possible - for manageable grooming. Keep moisturizing your hair - avoiding scalp - and use clarifying shampoos twice a week on scalp.

You can read some suggestions offered by visitors dealing with similar conditions here or take a look at this article about dandruff with some reference to products that deals with oily hair.
Wish you best of luck
