Naturally Black Curly Hair - Any Styling Tips?

I have naturally black curly hair and I have worn it up in a bun my whole entire life (I'm 20 years old) because I absolutely hate it. I have worn it down maybe two or three times and I took pictures but then I end up hating it.

Every time my finance comes home I straighten it because i feel really ugly when my hair is curly. Its pretty long right now and I'm debating on whether to get it cut short or not because I wont wear it down or any other way beside in a bun. So I might as well do something different? but..I'm scared that I wont like it. Does anyone have any tips?
