Styling Thick Short Hair - Advice?

Hi I recently participated in cops for cancer and completely shaved my head. I have always had very long and very very thick hair and have never really had any idea on how to style it at all.

Now that my hair is growing back (FINALLY) I really need some tips. My bangs just reach my eyebrows and the rest of my hair covers my ears and reaches my neck at the back. Lately i have been spiking the back up and combing my bangs over to one side of my face. I really like the look but with my hair being so thick the spikes don't usually stay up all day unless i put loads of styling products in making it look greasy and strandy.

I could really use some advice on how best to style my hair.
