Short and Updo - Spunky Curls

You can't suggest a short prom updo with long hair. It just doesn't work.
I have 2-3 inch long hair & I style it with hair wax (when it is dry, if not the substance will drip awkwardly) so its got a funky spiky look. I then pull it back some but I don't sleek it.
Another thing I've tried was pin-curling the top of my head to get some fun voluminous curls going on.
